Developed an aligned strategy and implementable road map for the leading DoD software Information Assurance product.

Objective

Develop a plan to re-architect a deployed software product. Provide visibility and transparency into the development process to allow product management and company leadership the ability to prioritize and make decisions on resource allocation to numerous competing software product demands.

Background

Our customer is the leading software product provider for Information Assurance (IA) to the Federal Government. Information Assurance plays a critical role in measuring and managing the governance, risk, and compliance of government and commercial computing systems. The product provides automation, enforcement, and continuous monitoring to manage enterprise security risks and identify action to correct them; a mission critical function in todays highly networked world. The client IA product has been successfully deployed to provide assurance to dozens of the nations most critical computing systems. The client team needed a way to enhance their requirements definition process to increase flexibility and visibility to enable more informed priority decision-making.

What we did

Coveros led a 6-week facilitated requirements envisioning process. Our consultants conducted a series of short, intense facilitated interactions with key product management, business, and technology stakeholders. From these sessions our team elicited the broad vision for the new software application, defined the requirements, determined level of development effort, and facilitated the client through prioritizing the order of developing the applications features. Light weight prototyping was used extensively to support the process by providing a visual representation of the requirements discussion. Captured requirements, manifested as user stories, were used as the foundation for construction of the release plan.

Coveros pragmatic approach to use of agile methodology approaches for requirements capture allowed the client to gain in a short period of time a clear understanding of the project and a plan to start development.

Results

  • Reduced the elapsed time required to define the products requirements by 50% versus traditional approaches.
  • Via structured facilitation allowed product line managers to manage continuance of their market facing responsibilities during the planning process.
  • Produced a plan that prioritized the highest business value for delivery first and eliminated waste of 'nice to have' features
